2011 Justice in Action Awards

Tony-award winning actor B.D. Wong, who currently stars in the television show Law & Order: SVU, delivered a side-splitting special message.  Wong, who sat at the head table at the recent White House state dinner honoring Hu Jintao, had the audience roaring at his cultural observations on such topics as White House etiquette, the "hot" factor of former President Bill Clinton, and the political incorrectness of Chinatown's traditional new year "Ching Kee" cookies.

#FairWageOnstage applauds the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers for taking this bold step in agreeing to a historic increase in wages for actors and stage managers. We are deeply grateful to Actors' Equity Association for fighting to better the lives of its members. And we are proud of our brothers and sisters who spoke up for the cause with signatures on our letter to management that demonstrated our commitment both to the Off-Broadway movement and to each other.

Minimization, stereotyping and exclusion of  Asian actors is commonplace in the entertainment industry. Replacing Asian roles with Anglo actors is even worse. We won't accept it.  Here's the New York Times article with BD, Daniel Day Kim and Constance Wu that directly confronts it.

BD Wong on Fatherhood

A FATHER'S PRAYER FOR HIS SON

"See, he is my son. He has nicknames. He has a personality. He has likes, and dislikes, and facial expressions, and mannerisms. We have a relationship. I know him. It is impossible to think about letting him go again today, after all this time. After everything we have been through together. No matter what I say I have learned from this incredible experience. No matter how much I tell myself, and others, how important it is to learn to let go. None of that matters right this very minute. Please don't make me say goodbye again, God. I guess I'm not ready after all. I confess. Call me a liar, or a hypocrite, or a man without a spine, I don't care, but I'm not ready after all. I'm only human.

And I am his father. And we need each other. Please, God."
